Mark your calendars for 16 – 18 June 2023 and come dance with us!

Concept

Shake The Change is an international dance festival that celebrates vernacular jazz dance and dances rooted in African-American culture through movement, music and community

The event aims to bring together dancers and lovers of dance from various personal, social and cultural backgrounds with a shared passion for discovering the historically and culturally rich world of swing dancing and jazz music, as well as other forms of dance and movement in general.

We perceive dance as a powerful artform with the ability to help people (re)connect to their authenticity, their creativity and each other.

Teachers

Jazz Messengers

Clàudia Fonte, Héctor Artal, and Sonia Ortega are the members of this trio formation that gets inspiration from how Jazz musicians musically relate with each other on stage. To achieve the dynamics in their dancing, Jazz Messengers are continuously developing a natural flow from one step to the next, they further enhance this through training and the synchronization of rhythmical movement. As individuals, each member brings their own essence to the dance, but together they work as one, both in class and on stage.

Špela Premelč & Janez Šepetavc

Špela started dancing at the age of 6 and hasn’t stopped since. Beginning with ballroom dancing, gymnastics and jazz ballet, she eventually found greater authenticity in contemporary dance and quickly became a teacher of this dance style herself.

Always searching for ways to expand her dancing experience and movement techniques, Špela discovered Lindy Hop in 2013 and immediately immersed herself in this rhythmical and expressive dance style. She began teaching locally in 2015 and has been upgrading and deepening her knowledge and love of the many swing dance styles at various festivals and dance workshops around the world. As a swing dancer and instructor Špela focuses on quality body movement as a fundamental basis for all dancing styles, rhythmically and musicality, and deeply values her relationship with her students as a co-creative two-way flow: going from teacher to student as well as student to teacher.

Janez started dancing in 2008 when he joined a crash course in a random bar and danced until 5 in the morning. And that was it. He was hooked. Wonder why? Because the thing that he loves the most about dancing is the ability to connect with a random person, make them smile and enjoy the dance. Priceless.

Vassiliki Papadopoulou

Vassiliki Papadopoulou has been dancing since she was 8 years old, starting with classical ballet, followed by contemporary, ballroom and Latin dances. At the age of 19, she found her passion in Lindy Hop and Vernacular Jazz, which charmed her with the energy and creativity that characterizes them. Since then, she has been dancing non stop, having attended numerous workshops in Greece and abroad. She loves teaching, performing and competing. In lindy hop and authentic jazz dances, she finds freedom, energy and joy, as they are for her a way of creative expression and a constant source of inspiration. She is currently located in her hometown, Athens, where she is teaching Lindy Hop & Authentic Jazz as a member of Rhythm Hoppers’ team.

Sonia and Hector

Sonia and Hector are professional dancers based on Jazz music -swing rhythm-. Lindy Hop is the dance in which they can openly evolve all techniques that they have learned through all their life. Argentinian tango, Latin rhythms, Classical Dance, and Contemporary dance are important disciplines that take part in their learning of the dance.

Claudia Fonte

Inspired by the versatility of jazz music, Claudia explores and embraces all kinds of creative expressions in her dancing. She believes in the importance of developing a personal dance language and has been cultivating her own authentic dance expression, based primarily on rhythmicity of movement, throughout her dancing career. Taking the classic rhythms of Swing music as the foundation of her dancing, she is continuously challenging herself to keep them alive through her own perspective and interpretation.

Maša Kagao Knez

Maša Kagao Knez is a dancer, choreographer and theatre practitioner. She first came into contact with the performing arts as a child through the work of her mother, Jasna Knez, a dancer and choreographer herself. Maša was educated by various international teachers, both in Slovenia and abroad, and in 2006 she completed professional training at Georges Momboye School of Traditional and Contemporary African dance in Paris. In 2013 she graduated from the Academy of Dance in Ljubljana and in 2021 she completed her Master’s degree in the Art of Movement at the AGRFT (Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television) in Ljubljana.

As a dancer, actress and choreographer she collaborates with institutional theatres as well as independent producers (PTL, SNG Drama, Municipal Theatre Ljubljana, SNG Nova Gorica, SLG Celje, APT, Mini Teater). For the last few years she has been a regular collaborator of director Ivana Djilas.

In 2009 Maša, together with dancer Dalanda Diallo and musician Damir Mazrek, co-founded the Baobab cultural and arts society, which operates in the field of dance, music and theatre. She is artistic director of cultural institution Studio 25 and  director of Diaspora, an artistic collective dedicated to the creation of dance and music productions.

Maša has received the Ksenija Hribar dance award in 2013. Three years later she won the third prize at the XX. Festival of choreographic miniatures in Belgrade as part of the duo with musician Murat.

Tina Božič

More about our concept

Due to the overall concept of the festival which aims to offer its participants a chance to deepen their knowledge of swing dancing by exploring a variety of dance techniques and styles and thus creating a wholesome learning experinece, only a Full Festival Pass which includes all three of the listed dance tracks will be available for purchase. In other words, registering for, say, only the solo track will not be possible, as all the classes are part of a larger, holistic dancing experience.

Trust us, you will love it!

Music & events

Reverent Juke

Born in 2015 out of the collaboration between the arranger Mathieu Najean and the dancer Sep Vermeersch, Reverent Juke has its roots in the golden era of swing.

With an explosive rhythm section built on the swinging drums of Tom Lambrecht, the bouncing bass and singing of Andrew Bolton and the wild stride of Julien Gillain, Reverent Juke sets the swing on fire with its three blowers, Martin Bolton on clarinet, Olivier Faber on trumpet and Mathieu Najean on reeds, blowing their horns on the fiery flames till they drop.

Icy Isabella Jazz Band

Icy Isabella Jazz Band is a fresh six-piece group of professional musicians hailing from Ljubljana that plays swing music from the late 1930s and early 1940s. Their repertoire is carefully selected and arranged especially with Lindy Hop and Balboa dancers in mind.
